BMW M50 / M52 / M54 CLM oil pump chain tensioner

The oil pumps of the M50 series engines are a weak point - especially for those that have raised the RPM limit or spend a lot of time in the upper RPM range. There are many causes of engine lubrication failure, including a worn chain, worn gears, and crank system harmonics. A common solution is to weld the nut onto the pump driving shaft, but due to the chain slap from the worn chain / sprockets, the shaft breaks instead of loosening the nut. Even a slightly slack chain at high speed vibrates and causes the nut to loosen. After the nut is completely unscrewed, the gear will fall off the shaft causing loss of oil pressure and catastrophic engine damage within seconds.
